Lido 14 Nationals 2017 – 60th Class Champs!

The Lido 14 was conceived on Lido Isle, so it was only fitting for the 60th to return to Newport where it all began 60 years ago. The Lido 14 has been a One Design Class in Southern California for the past 60 years with active fleets up and down the west coast.

The class has been known to attract some of the best sailors from the area, and the 60th running lived up to everyone’s expectations.

The event was co-sponsored this year by the Lido Isle Yacht Club and the Balboa Yacht Club, with regatta chair Walter Johnson at the helm. The PRO was Jim Bailey a Lido Isle Yacht Club staff commodore. It was especially special this year because the event returned to the Newport Harbor turning basin where the first Nationals were held in 1957.

After a day of qualifying, the fleet was split into Gold and Silver. From there 12 races were completed with no discards. The Conditions were flat water and 8-10 knots out of the South Southwest, which meant boat speed and hitting the shifts was the name of the game, “It was tricky sailing, with lots of shifts and crowded mark rounding’s” said Ullman Sails Jeff Lenhart who went on to finish 5th with Chuck Ullman crewing for him.

The racing was exciting; with the whole regatta coming down to the last race. “ (We) gave it away, but then got it back with a great last race” said winner Chris Raab and Scott McKeiver who beat Mark Gaudio and John Papadopoulos to win the regatta. “Walter did a great job keeping the course square and the regatta participants under control! Lido Isle provided for a great social backdrop in which to celebrate 60 years of Lido 14 sailing. BYC provide back office support and fielded a world-class panel who perfected the SI’s and managed the protest hearings. It ended up being the perfect blend of talent, and facilities to carry off the 60th, in the spirit the founders of the class would have been proud.

Chris Raab and Scott McKeiver started the regatta with two double-digit finishes but finished with eight top three finishes.

Respectifully Submitted,

Walter Johnson
